Hi,
I am cleaning out my dad's cottage garage in Detour Michigan as he sadly recently passed away and there is an old town canoe that I need to sell with the serial number above. He thought it was made around 1925. I don't even know what type it is. The boat is in good original shape, original wood and canvas with only a little restoration needed at the bow. Any information would be much appreciated. I read the forum for how much is my canoe worth and looked at the classified and I still do not have an idea of how much to ask. Thank you in advance!
Kristen

Hi Kristen and welcome. It's pretty nice looking for a canoe that old. Someone will be along shortly with info from the build record. There are some good folks in the U.P. who would be happy you help. There is also a classified section here on this website that for a modest fee, non members can advertise. Detour is 4 or 5 hours from me.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 80417 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between September, 1923 and March, 1924. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 27th, 1924 to Chicago, Illinois. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. My guess is that you can probably find someone who will offer you $500 to $1000 for your canoe depending on the "restoration needed at the bow." Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson
