I apologize in advance if I’m not posting this correctly. I’m asking for any information on an OT canoe I just got at auction. The serial number is 16 then space for some wooden piece that I believe is to hold the floor decking. Then 56996. Thanks to anyone willing to help me out. From what I gathered from the internet, it seemed like the “16” is usually after the serial number but it’s definitely before the serial number on both the stern and bow with some wooden piece in between. I will post a picture if anyone would like me to. Thank you!

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 56996 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Charles River model with red Western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between November and December, 1919. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 2nd, 1920 to San Francisco, California. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/pricing-plans/join to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
