You may want to check the digits in each end again if you have a 15 foot long canoe. The Old Town build record for number 172539 shows a 16 foot long lapstrake boat that shipped in 1963 as shown below.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 172559 is a 15 foot long fifty pound model with a keel. It was built between October and November, 1962. The original exterior canvas covering was painted Old Town yellow. It shipped on April 16th, 1963 to Woodruff, Wis.
