Materials for 1926 OT HW.

Novice at the wood canoe
I've returned to restoring my OT HW. It was glassed about 50 years ago, all of that is off. Backside repairs to cracked ribs are finished. I'll be splicing on ends to the decayed stem ends and replacing about 40 feet of planking. I'm about to order materials. Two questions:
1) How long were the original stem bands on an HW? 4.5 or 6 feet? They were gone when I got the canoe.
2) When ordering the canvas, how much longer than the 17 foot canoe? From photos of the canvassing process, it looks like one needs at least an extra foot on each end for the clamps that hold the canvas.

I have a 17 foot long Old Town from 1927 and it has 54 inch stem bands. See https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/3994/ for more details. The length of the canvas will depend on which canvasing technique you plan to use (i.e. by hand, in a sling, other). You will probably want several feet extra on each end. Others with more canvasing experience will probably have more specific suggestions. Good luck,

Benson
