Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hello All,

I have an opportunity to buy a Greenwood Prospector in nice useable condition. I was hoping that someone could describe the handling characteristics for me. Especially compared to the Chestnut Pal/Deer that I bought with the help of this forum five years ago.

Thanks

The Prospector is, in my view, a justly renowned tripping canoe. I have had one for about 15 years and I love it. I was the first one in the Norumbega Chapter to get one and now 4-5 of the guys in the club have one. It’s exceptionally quick when fully loaded. It’s deeper than most canoes; 15 inches vs the usual 12. With more freeboard, it’s a bit trickier to handle in wind when paddling solo and lightly loaded. It’s the one canoe that I would without hesitation advise you to buy. Its fame is such that you can always find a buyer if you don’t like it.
