Curious about Wooden Canoes
I am trying to positively ID a 20' E.M. White canoe. The serial number
20-57-3028 is stamped into the stem. It is believed to be a 20' E.M. White Guide model built in 1958. I checked Dan Miller's site (great resource!!!) but found no info in regards to serial no's of White canoes. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

White did use serial numbers briefly from the late 1940s until the early 1960s when Bub King was running the shop. The format was xx-yy-zzzz where xx was the length in feet, yy was the last two digits of the year, and zzzz was a sequential serial number. Hovever, there are no known White records to verify any of this.

The eBay listing at http://cgi.ebay.com/1958-20-foot-E-...173889049QQcategoryZ23800QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem shows this quite clearly. This is a bit early for a factory fiberglass job but there may be more documentation available with this canoe since it is described as a 1958 canoe even though the serial number indicates that it came off of the form in 1957. Feel free to reply here if this doesn't answer your question.
