When installing a replacement rib on an OT guide restoration does one use the existing holes on the original planking in tacking the new rib in? Or does one use hot water to swell the hole shut before tacking the rib in? Or just start new holes? First time replacing a rib and don't recall seeing the issue addressed before.
Thanks

I always tack into new wood. The old holes do not weaken the plank at all, and they are not visible once under canvas. I usually offset by about 1/2 an inch and try and maintain the nailing pattern.

If tacking on the end or edge of the plank, splitting may occur. I drill a pilot hole through the planking to avoid that.

I use a brad nail to drill, to separate the wood fibres, rather than sever them like a twist drill would do.
