Curious about Wooden Canoes
It took all summer for this serendipitous find to finally come to me. Overall it seems to be in very good condition. There are two holes in the hull but they are an easy fix. I have the broken rib piece for the smaller hole. The length is about 16', width at gunnels 33' but more like 34" at widest part of hull and the depth is about 12". I am assuming the S/N is 13926 although the "1" is not well formed. At first I thought it was a flaw in the plate but it seems more likely it is a numeral "1". What do you think? All of the wood matches descriptions that I've found for a Morris canoe. Spruce gunnels, mahogany decks, seat frames and yokes, except one yoke which seems to be oak or ash. A replacement? Outside stem is oak and it has the full keel. I am assuming it is a Model A, Type One. I hope it won't be too long to get it shined up but I have several others in front of it. The priority list may change!
