Stern pad

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Bruce Larsen just finished recanvasing my Jerry Stelmok 1999 Willowwhisp. There had been a bunch of damage to the tip of the stern stem, and I know that I roll it on the stern stem when I get it up on my shoulders. So I thought about a pad. The one I came up with might be of interst to others. A 1' square gardeners foam pad. Folded and stitched with heavy seine twine or something similar. Then a short strap to the carry handle to pull it forward into place. There is enough give so you can just pull it forward off the stern and into the canoe when paddling. It can stay in place when driving.

Great idea! I have often thought of making a “bra” of sorts for the bow and stern. As we get older it’s not so much of a “clean and jerk” move to get these beasts up.
