square stern thwart placement

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Greetings everyone, I'm attempting to determine a location for the middle thwart on an 18ft square stern I'm reworking. It was located 15 inches aft of the center and because the canoe's past history I'm not sure that is correct. Is this standard practice because of the square stern construction?

The Old Town catalog page shown at https://forums.wcha.org/attachments/1997/ for their square-end paddling canoe may help. They had a bench seat near the middle of the 18 foot long version for rowing. I don't believe that there was a "standard practice" so I would encourage you to put the thwart where it will work best for you. Good luck,

Benson
