Seat structure

Two trips, of about two hours each and the seat is remarkably comfortable. However, it has stretched about 1% (1 1/2" in 80"), so I've just tightened up the longest side-to-side strip.

I'm afraid the UK has moved so far away from the source of animal products that most people's experience is under plastic at the supermarket.

Babiche = rawhide lace, traditional for seats. Don’t varnish it—just keep it tight and let it dry hard. Fore-and-aft weaving is simple, diagonal a bit stronger. Strickland likely used whatever was at hand: rawhide/babiche early on, ash or cane later. A rein rounder is how flat strips are turned into round thongs.
