Removing the old canvas

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I am about to start the removal of the old canvas on my 1932 Old Town. Of course I will consult THE BOOK before starting, but any suggestions would help. Presently away from home but 3 weeks at Christmas are dedicated to getting started.

Hello,

It is pretty easy. All you need to do is remove the gunnels, remove the stem bands, and peel the old canvas off. You'll end up with a canoe skin that will mystify the trash man!

Mark -

I thought it was that simple, thus the reason for the question!! It seemed to simple, but I am ready to attack. I am looking forward to getting it skinned to see the true condition. I am hoping to go straight into stripping the interior.
Thanks for help.

The canoe's old skin can make a funky garage-hanging, although Martha Stewart probably wouldn't approve! We're saving a nice one to tack to the outside of the barn in the spring.

I like to leave the old canvas on if I'm stripping a canoe myself. It keeps the stripper from leaking through the planking onto the floor.
Commercial strippers usually require that you take the canvas off because it is likely to go into a trough.

Hello ,:)
I,m new on this site and will at some point be restoring a wood and canvass ,
My first project:eek:
So I will be following this thread with interest,
But for the first of what I am sure will be many questions ,
What is "The BOOK" you refer to ?
I,m currently trying to locate a "How to" type book to help with my own project ,
Any suggestions welcome >:D
Regards Noel:)

Hi Noel,

"the book" is "The Wood and Canvas Canoe" by Rollin Thurlow. There are a few on eBay right now, or you can get one directly from Rollin at Northwoods Canoe Co. In Maine. There is a link on the builders directory.

"The Book" is likely a reference not to "The Bible", but rather to

"The Wood and Canvas Canoe: A Complete Guide to Its History, Construction, Restoration, and Maintenance"
by Jerry Stelmok & Rollin Thurlow

It's kind of like "The Bible" to wooden canoe aficionados.

The Book

Thanks guys,:D
I,ve ordered a copy from Amazon,
They had it here in the UK for imediate despatch !;)
So hows this project developing ?
Is that old canvas off yet ?
Are there any photos ?:p
Regards Noel: :)

Yes, THE BOOK is "The Wood and Canvas Canoe: A Complete Guide to Its History, Construction, Restoration, and Maintenance"
by Jerry Stelmok & Rollin Thurlow.
Took a day for recuperation after a 44 hour trip from Austalia. Starting tomorrow, will build a couple of stands and hopefully by noon we will be stripping the inside. I will send pictures as the project develops.

REALLY starting this time!!!

Did not get home for the holidays:mad: However, the job is coming to an end and the wife and I will be back in the good ol' US of A on Feb. 1st. Plan on stripping on Feb. 3rd (one day for jet lag recovery time), then removing the canvas immediately thereafter. Pictures will be posted, and questions are sure to follow.
