Peterborough Kawartha Restoration

I am new to the forum and just embarking on a restoration of my Peterborough Canoe Company outboard. A fun winter project.

I believe it is the Kawartha Model #417, serial #3640. Trying to figure out what year it might have been built. Would anyone be abile to help with that? Any and all background information welcome.

Doug

Welcome, there are no known serial number records available for Peterborough so a confirmed date is not likely to be available. How long is this boat? Page 16 of the 1950 Peterborough catalog at the link below identifies the model 417 as the 15 foot long Handy Boy model and the 17 foot long Kawartha model is model 418. Good luck,

Benson

Pre-war (ww2) the 17' Kawartha was assigned model number 417, though many of the catalogs didn't give a model number for the outboard boats. Why they might have changed after the war is open to speculation.

Thx for your help. I did notice that the 1927 catalogue identifies the Kawartha as model 417 on page 21, so am fairly certain this one comes from around then. That catalogue mentioned the dimensions and they are identical to the one I have. Length 17 ft, beam 48". It looks very similar to the catalogue drawing. In my case, the backs of the seats have been removed, although the holes are still there. That plus the plaque says 417 under Model. My sense is that it is from around that time. I will keep you updated as the restoration progresses. https://woodencanoemuseum.org/manufacturer-catalog/peterborough-1927

I just noticed that the catalog has a stern seat that wraps around on only one side, but your boat has supports for both sides.
So when you acquire a suitable antique outboard motor, you will have a choice of which side to sit on!
Great project!

Doug,
Welcome aboard- and thanks for sharing your project!
There is another "local" group that may be able to assist with information related to Peterborough runabouts.
Have you reached out to the Antique and Classic Boat Society? They have a very active Toronto chapter, including a couple who trailered local Peterborough boats in last years Canada Day Parade in Peterborough...
