I might have an opportunity to aquire a Penn Yan Rainbow. Did they all have outer stems? At 16 feet, are they comparitable in weight to say an Old Town short deck? How do they paddle?

Randy Hunt and I restored his father's 17' rainbow. It did NOT have an outdside stem BUT it did have a small strip on the outside of the stem that is under the canvas. Don't know why. I don't think it's been in the water yet. Randy moved to California in July and I haven't talked to him in a few weeks. The weight was reasonable. Not real heavy. But we used a no.12 canvas as I recall. Randy plans on posting a final post with it on water, so stay tuned.

All of the mahogany trimmed Rainbows had outside stems as standard equipment. The spruce trimmed Rainbows offered outside stems as an option at additional cost. The spruce model was discontinued in 1948, the mahogany trimmed version was offered through 1960.
