Old Town SN#99325 16' OCTA

red cedar

I was able to purchase red cedar planking from Eric Harman listed on the builders/supply page of this web site, for my Old Town restores, very nice stuff, he's from the west coast, hence the red cedar, as opposed to all the white on the east coast

Thanks Tom. That is good info.

The build sheet says that the canoe came from the factory painted dark green. So my knee jerk reaction on what color to paint the canoe was dark green.

This type of question comes up regularly so you may want to review the messages at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=4689 and elsewhere. The exterior paint color is easy to change so most people here will encourage you to pick a color and design that you like and not worry about it too much. Many of my canoes do not have the original paint colors on them now.

I have seen in some of your other posts that there have been some interesting discussions on the Yankee model canoe. I have used the search and man threads come up. While the posts are cool, most are for identification. What I have found is that there is sometimes some good chatter burried in these identification threads. Unfortunately, it is hard to find the chatter. Could you point me in the dirrection of the links to the threads you were referring to. Thanks a million in advance.

Glad the restoration is coming along well! Pictures?

I found a few threads with chatter involving the Yankee model... not sure this is all of them, but you may want to look at Sue Audette's book "Old Town, Our First Hundred Years" for the history of OT in general.

If any of the following discussions brings questions to mind, please ask. Generally, I'm learning right along with everyone else... we learn from each other.

Here is a couple of quick pictures of the canoe in the midst of the restore process. The beginning ones can be found at the beginning of the thread (for all readers who have not been following the thread to this point)

*The first one is the repairs done to the planking
*The second one is the canoe ready to be canvased with two coats of varnish inside
*The third is the canoe with canvas on ready to be filled
*The fourth and fifth ones are the canoe after 3 coats of filler

At present, we are waiting on the filler to dry. In the mean time, I am working on the seats.

I will post more pictures of the restore soon.

*I have to thank Paul Miller. He has been awsome working with me on this. He is not only a great craftsman, he is great teacher as well.*

Wow!! A really nice job. But you're not quite finished -- we need to see some pictures of this canoe in its natural habitat -- when will you be relaunching?

Beautiful canoe! I love your color scheme, and agree with Greg that you should post a picture of this beautiful canoe on water!

Great Job! Love the colors. It has been great watching this canoe transform back into a graceful beauty.
