Curious about Wooden Canoes
Found the serial number on a project canoe and need some help identifying it.

67825 17

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Cheers!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 67825 is 17 feet long, AA grade, an Otca model with western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, 20” mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts and seats, with a keel and a floor rack. Construction of the canoe started in 1921 and it was finished on January 23, 1922. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It was shipped on February 21, 1922, to Wilkes-Barre, PA. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much, Greg. The canoe was in the attic of a garage at Lake Carey in Tunckhannock, PA, about 30 miles from Wilkes-Barre. My uncle used it extensively when he was younger and involved in the Boy Scouts but it has not seen the light of day for at least 45 years. It took a little beating but nothing that can't be repaired. Looking forward to bring this canoe back to life.

Thanks, again!
