Old Town Serial Number help request

Curious about Wooden Canoes
My father is giving me an Old Town canoe with serial number 17759 - 15. He believes he bought it around 1975. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The build record for the Old Town canoe with serial number 17759 shows a 16 foot long canoe and the 15 at the end of your number indicates a 15 foot long one. None of the records in the 17759x range show a 15 foot long canoe. Some of the tips at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help you discover the correct numbers. I would also help if you can attach some pictures of the numbers from both ends and the canoe. The chart at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/oldtown_chart.html shows that an Old Town that shipped from the factory in 1975 may have a serial number in the 217K range. The scanned Old Town records stop at 210999 so none of us here have any newer information for canoes like that. You may be able to contact the customer service department at the Old Town Canoe Company and get a copy from their paper records if they are not too busy. Please reply here if they are not able to satisfy your request. A canoe from that era should also have a hull identification number on the starboard stern. The information at http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm may help you decode this number. Good luck,

Benson

Benson,

Thanks so much for the information. My father is bringing the canoe out from Michigan to California in a few weeks, so I will be able to get photos and verify the numbers he sent. If I am still stumped, I'll post again. Best Wishes,

Michael
