Hello Everyone,

I am a new member with a new project. I currently have a 1967 Old Town Guide that I restored last year. No wood replacement, just strip, repaint and varnish.

I recently picked up another Old Town canoe at a local auction. It is in need of a complete rebuild (stems, ribs, gunnels, planking, etc, etc.) The serial number is 96473 and it is 17' long. I started to remove the fiberglass exterior and found that it has a full keel. Any information on this canoe would be great.

Welcome to the WCHA. The Old Town canoe with serial number 96473 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, a keel, outside stems, and a bang plate along the full length of the keel. It was built between December, 1927 and January, 1929. The original exterior paint color was brilliant green. It shipped on February 21st, 1929 to Easton, Penna.

A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

Please reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson
