Old Town Sailing Canoe

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi Folks, Another project has landed in my hands. During the the Memorial weekend boat show, hosted by the Wooden Canoe Heritage Museum, Spooner Wi, I purchased an 18 ft. square stern sailing canoe through the live auction. The manufacturer was unknown at the time due to layers of paint covering the stem. Prior to striping the canoe I found a boat registration card attached under one of the thwarts showing it was registered as an Old Town canoe. I contacted the prior owner who claimed it was an OT he purchased from St. Vincent Du Paul thrift store 48 years ago. He said the transom was rotted so he cut off 6 inches and built a new transom. He also removed the sponsors and thought the canoe was built sometime in the early 1930's. I had the canoe stripped at V&L Stripping, Appleton Wi and found the following numbers 124681 18. I would appreciate the build records or any additional info. Thanks!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 124681 is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, square end paddling model with open spruce gunwales, half ribs, a keel, outside stems, and sponsons. It was built between March and June, 1938. The original exterior paint color was Princeton Orange. It shipped on July, 5th, 1938 to Madison, Wisconsin. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the project and thanks for supporting the Wooden Canoe Heritage Museum,

Benson
