Old Town 18' Guide #171624 history request

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hello - I've just purchased an Old Town canoe - an 18" Guide (I think), #171624, and would love to know it's build history. The canoe needs lots of refinishing, but is basically sound.
Thanks!
David

The Old Town canoe with serial number 117624 is shown as 18 feet long Guide model fitted with a keel. The canoe was built in 1961-62. The original exterior paint color was red. It was shipped to Newaygo, Michigan on May 29, 1962. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe.

Thanks very much Greg.
The build record does not say whether this is a AA or CS grade. I can't tell from studying the boat, other than it appears to have red cedar planking, white cedar ribs, hardwood decks and thwarts, and dark colored gunwales of unknown origin. It also came with a floor rack and fan backs.
I'm sure I'll have many more questions as I attempt to bring this canoe back to life, (it's been stored fro the last 20 years).
Thanks again,
David

By the time your canoe was built, Old Town had done away with the multiple grade system. Instead, they built canoes all in the same grade, with spruce inwales, mahogany outwales and native hardwood decks, seat frames and thwarts.
