Do you typically add the outwale before or after the paint job is done? As with an open gunwale, do you add bedding compond under it and then paint the seam where it hits the canoe?

I do it after painting, without bedding.

I do a final install of gunwales after paint, and put 1 final coat of varnish on after install. I would rather have a messy varnish line then paint line.

How I did it

I described how I made and installed gunwale caps in an earlier thread. See this thread:
