Need advice, please: When measuring the depth of a canoe, do you measure from the top of the gunwale to the top of the rib, or to the planking?
 
Technically, you measure depth of a canoe from the outside of the hull amidships, excluding the keel, to the top of the gunwales. Practically, measure from the top of gunwales to the inside of the planking - you'll be 5/32" plus the thickness of the canvas shy of the true depth. Close enough for most purposes...
