Is this to far gone for just paint?

Curious about Canoe Design
I have been striping this Old Town Scout down. Well I think it is a Scout. It has the extra short rib in between the full rib on the floor. No decal.

It might float with just paint on it.
Most of us on the forum would recanvas, fill, and paint…all new. But prior to that we’d make all necessary repairs, strip ,sand, and revarnish the interior. The best time to do that is with canvas off. IMHO now is the time, brother!
I guess it depends on your goal. A Floater? Or a floater that looks like someone has taken care of it.

The key questions are how badly it leaks and your objectives as Dave suggested. What does the deck look like and can you share the serial number? Thanks,

Benson

Dave,
My dad use to say. "Your in a boat, what else do I have to do besides paddle and bail it out."
A lot f history in this old boat for me. Maybe someday I or someone else would like doing that.
Replacing canvassing would be best practice.

Benson,
It didn’t leak much before I started removing paint with a heat gun but it was cracking bad.

You can easily paint it and see if that will give you another year or so.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 159789 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Yankee model with half ribs, and a keel. It was built between April and October, 1953. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 9th, 1954 to Columbia, Missouri. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Page 11 of the 1954 catalog at https://www.woodencanoe.org/_files/ugd/537308_1114e7b1c8f541d480d8ff52c4eb10e3.pdf has more details. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,

Benson
