Interesting Morris Receipts

Thought I'd post a few interesting bills sent to the Morris factory.

The first shows how much had to be paid for an electrician. This may have been for the family home.

The next bill lets us know that Morris had paddles and other "equipments" engraved for customers (at least, this is what I think the bill is saying...).

Leyland Whipple was a well-respected photographer in his day.

This is the only bill relating specifically to the Veazie Canoe Company... one to the IRS!

This document involves plumbing the old Morris home-- the original factory and home of Charles Morris. The date is 1916. According to Charlie's great-granddaughter, the house was the first in Veazie to have a flushing toilet. And here you see the three town officials who signed off on that project.

It looks like that the I.R.S. felt that the Veazie Canoe Company had a net income of more than $5000 in 1911. The information at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-soi/02corate.pdf indicates the tax rate at that time was one percent for all income over $5000 but it appears that they were willing to compromise for a $25 tax payment in this case. Interesting stuff,

Benson
