I'm looking at various canoes for purchase and would like to know you have any additional information on either of these serial numbers. I'm especially interested in the model and weight of these two.

Thank you

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with hull identification number (HIN) XTC23098M79E and serial number 223098 is a 17 foot long Chipewyan Tripper model with aluminum inserts in the rails. It weighed 80 pounds and was built in November, 1978. The original exterior color was blue. It shipped on January 3rd, 1979 to Champaign, Illinois. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Page 9 in the 1978 catalog at https://www.woodencanoe.org/_files/ugd/537308_c90d9b8b9d22439aba78b75be0163b6a.pdf has more details.

The information at https://www.usps.org/national/safety/HIN/HIN.pdf indicates that the canoe with the HIN of XTC98930E787 was built in April, 1987 for the 1987 model year. The scanned records stop around 1984 so no build record is readily available for this canoe. You can probably identify it by matching the dimensions at https://www.woodencanoe.org/_files/ugd/537308_ea06ed94bd494a4bbc974a6859cb14bc.pdf in the 1987 catalog. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck,

Benson
