I have two Old Town Canoes, serial numbers, 16- 22201 and 16- 32778 - Any information on age?
Thank you - BenB

The Old Town canoe with serial number 22201 is an 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, spruce finish rails, and a keel. It was built between April and May, 1912. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on June 3rd, 1912 to Eaton Rapids, Michigan.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 32778 is an 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with closed spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between June and July, 1914. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on July 21st, 1914 to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the thumbnail images attached below. These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you Benson Grey

Thank you most sincerely. The people who bought the 22201 canoe used it for their honeymoon and we purchased it 45 years ago for $80 for our honeymoon. It's great to know the history. BenB
