Canvas weight

Just curious, big square stern canoes. I usually use #8. I'm thinking about using #6 on the next one. It just seems so darn heavy. I'm sure I've used it in the past. What do most of you use ? and what weight did they use 60 70 years ago?

The Old Town square stern model was introduced in the 1917 catalog and number six canvas was included in the description as shown below. This was also listed in the 1964 catalog which was the last year that boat was included in the catalog.

I’ve used #8 most of the time. #6 would be fine since most are trailered.

Thanks, All these square sterns I do sit in boat houses. Over the years I've told them not to leave them in the water. So most of my customers now have lifts/straps to raise them up in the boat house when not in use. I'm not sure they listen to me though.
