1964 OT Guide – Finished

LOVES Wooden Canoes
I finished my second restore yesterday. A ’64 OT Guide purchased in pretty rough shape with a lot of rot and discoloration, although no broken ribs. I used oxalic acid after stripping, and was very pleased by the results. The keel, decks, outwales, and seats were too far gone to save. I had a little fun with it and added hand caned seats, carrying thwarts, short top rails, and a floor rack. The new decks and carry thwarts were modeled after a 1930 OT I have. The outwales I built are tapered and D-shaped. Hoping to take her out soon.

Wow, that is gorgeous work and inspirational for me, a guy starting on his first restoration. I'm also interested to see you live in the Northwest as we do. Did you buy your canvas, filler, etc. out here somewhere or order it online?

Thanks for the complement. The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know! I bought my canvas from Rollin. He sells filler, too. This was my first try at mixing my own filler, and it seemed to go well.

Way to go! I am impressed with how well the interior looks. That's not to say that the whole restoration looks good! Congratulations. It's great to see another boat get its well-deserved second life. Thanks for posting.
