16’ Old Town Rowing Canoe

I recently acquired a modified 16’ Old Town rowing canoe. I would like some history on it the serial number: 28809. I’m new to restoring and the condition of this canoe will be a challenge but not overwhelming. The modification is one end was replaced with a transom which needs replacing. I’ll have no trouble removing it but installing a new has left me with a number of questions but I will leave that for another posting after I read another few hundred postings. This seems like a fantastic forum and I have enjoyed the reading so far.
Thanks to all.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 28809 is a 16 foot long double end boat model in CS (Common Sense or middle) grade with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, and ash seats. It was built between September, 1913 and June, 1914. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 25th, 1914 to New York City. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the project,

Benson
