Caleb's Canoe Project

A momentous day here - the first project was moved into the new shop. Ironically, not mine though. Instead, we brought in younger son Caleb's project which he is going to work on during his extended semester break from Paul Smith's College.

Caleb's canoe is a 1942 Old Town Special Square End Paddling Canoe that he received for his birthday.

What makes it special? For starters, while Old Town offered the SEPC in 15' and 18' lengths, this one was "built on the 18' form cut to 16'." It has a removable bow seat, the stern seat is bolted 5" ahead of standard, and the rowing seat and bow seat mounted 2" higher than standard.

The biggest challenge for this project will be replacing the transom. Otherwise, the canoe is in really good condition, no ribs or planking appear to need replacement or repair, minor work to the stem tips, and new canvas, and she'll be ready to go.

Photo of happy owner attached, teardown will commence when we return from holiday travels.

Very nice, have been looking around for a similar project. One question for correctly describing this type of craft, when does a square end canoe become what would be called a boat? Can't wait to see the finished pictures.

Caleb spent the day working on his canoe. It is now naked. Next step, pull the transom.

Yes, a couple new arrivals photo-bombed Caleb's canoe. One is a B-grade Indian Girl, the other a Ruggles.

A Ruggles you say? I am now sitting at full attention.... Care to elaborate?

All the best for a healthy and happy New Year to you and your family !
