A momentous day here - the first project was moved into the new shop. Ironically, not mine though. Instead, we brought in younger son Caleb's project which he is going to work on during his extended semester break from Paul Smith's College.
Caleb's canoe is a 1942 Old Town Special Square End Paddling Canoe that he received for his birthday.
What makes it special? For starters, while Old Town offered the SEPC in 15' and 18' lengths, this one was "built on the 18' form cut to 16'." It has a removable bow seat, the stern seat is bolted 5" ahead of standard, and the rowing seat and bow seat mounted 2" higher than standard.
The biggest challenge for this project will be replacing the transom. Otherwise, the canoe is in really good condition, no ribs or planking appear to need replacement or repair, minor work to the stem tips, and new canvas, and she'll be ready to go.
Photo of happy owner attached, teardown will commence when we return from holiday travels.
