Old Town rowing dinghy

Hello, I am inquiring for some information about my Grandfather's two Old Town dinghys. The one I am working on is 9'2" with a squared off Stern transom. In the bow are the numbers 17400. I've not found a number on the second dinghy which has served as a tender for as long as I can remember. Both boats have three seats and two rowing positions. Any information would be most appreciated.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 17400 is a 16 foot long canoe with two pointed ends so my guess is that you may have the Old Town with serial number 174001. This is a nine foot long, AA (or top) grade, dinghy with half ribs, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between June and December, 1964. The original exterior paint color was white. It shipped on February 22nd, 1965 to Syracuse, Kansas. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer this description doesn't match the dinghy. Many old wooden canoes and boats have a serial number on both inside stems and a decal or tag with the manufacturer's logo on the bow deck. The number is usually stamped on the top of the lower part of the stems. The inside stems are the long curved pieces of wood that form the ends of the canoe. You want to look on the part that extends out from under the decks on the bottom of the floor inside the hull. The serial numbers are stamped in each end of the canoe so check both if a single digit is not clear. These numbers in the stern of boats are occasionally on the edge of the center...
