Interlux Brightside Polyurethane Question

Curious about Wooden Canoes
What else if anything can be used for a thinner and brushing liquid other than what is recommended on the can? Sure would be nice to have an alternative that is locally available. Besides that, I sure would like to get the canoe painted.

I have used Brightside on two canoes applying with a foam roller followed immediately with a dry brush to kill the bubbles. I did not find it necessary to thin beyond using Penetrol as Dave suggests. The results were truly pleasing and the finish holds up extremely well. Hope you have similar results. I used gasoline for clean up of the brush etc. although these days that doesn't save you much money over thinner.

I've painted three sailboats and a couple of canoes over the years with Brightside (rolling and tipping) and never added a single drop of anything to it. They came out very nice. The first coat usually looks awful, but the second coat is gorgeous. The reason you add things to paint is because it isn't doing something you need it to do (not flowing, not leveling, brush dragging, etc.). The first thing to do is to try some and see how well it's working right out of the can. As for thinner, the general consensus is that the paint is so expensive these days, fixing a mess is such a pain in the butt, and modern paint chemistry is complex enough that saving a few bucks with non-factory thinner is usually more risky than smart.

Two coats of Brightside, painted out in my driveway. It had sat outside for three years after being painted and had spent the previous summer out on a mooring buoy when this photo was taken. It was in for spring cleaning.

While you can sometimes get away with doing this, it is often just asking for trouble. Best to use what is recommended by the manufacturer

Thanks for all the response and info. I did find out today, good old paint thinner will do the trick. Also from a pretty darn good source.
Now I guess I'll see how bad I can mess it up. Ha!

Have a great evening all.

So? How did the basic paint thinner job work out for you?

So? How did it work?

I'm on the edge of my cane seat here!
