Western Red Cedar needed

Charles Allin

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Any one have knowledge of location of western red cedar lumber availability along east coast or else where? Need for restoration of an Old Town Otca canoe. Not available locally. Appreciate your response. Charles Allin

Charles,
Try going to your local lumber yard and getting a Red Cedar 4x4 post. Find as clear a one as you can and then resaw it. Look for straight grain too. Red Cedar decking may be available too.

Western red cedar

Charlie,

After our telephone conversation yesterday I thought I would try to find the thread where I had previously recommended to the forum using quarter sawn w. cedar clapboards to make all my canoe planking as I recalled that it had some other good recommendations for sources for you to consider. Do a search for the thread titled "Houston We have a problem".
If you don't find any in good ole sunny Florida, you can get it when you come North this July. Bring it to my shop and we'll plane it to thickness. I'll also check the lumber yard where I have gotten it in the past and if there is any I will grab it for you. Recall that you said you needed 60 lineal feet.
