Hi - my uncle recently passed and he has an ole town canoe with serial 120303 16. I am trying to get information about the canoe to sell it. I thought he mentioned it was from the 40’s but I’m not sure!

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 120303 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Otca model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, a mast seat, a mast step, a rudder and rub rails. It was built between January, 1937 and February, 1940. The original exterior paint colors were similar to the ones shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design45.gif which was known as the design number 45. It shipped on July 27th, 1940 to Providence, Rhode Island. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/pricing-plans/join to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer this description doesn't match the canoe. The fastest way top to find a good new home for a canoe like this is usually a listing at https://www.woodencanoe.org/classifieds in the WCHA classifieds. The page at https://www.woodencanoe.org/ad-instructions explains the process. Feel free to reply if you have any other questions. Good luck with the sale,

Benson
