Two restoration questions:

Lew's Canoes

Two questions that I would appreciate any help with: a.) I am restoring a 1930's OT HW and need to make new mahogany outwales. What is the correct cross sectional shape for these outwales, and were they tapered as they approached the stems?, and b.) I am also working on a 1960's vintage Chestnut Chum. The owner wants it painted as close as possible to the original red color that Chestnut would have used. Can anyone recommend a source for a good red color match? Is Kirby's #24 Red a close match? Thanks !!

Hello.

I'm doing a 1931 old town heavy water with sponsons at this time. Yes, the outwales taper both ways, The profile would be diffcult to describe, Send me your address and I'll send you a short piece along with my thoughts about bending. I too am using Mahogany.

I've got a colour mix formula for that red. Its for the CIL marine enamel tint base. I don't know if other brands have tint base, or how close it will come.

I can provide the formula if you like.

I've found that some stock brands have a "Chinese Red" that is similar.
