Can you tell me anything about this 16' Thompson. What should I look for to help identify. Saw no numbers on stem. Sorry I didnt do better on photos, my phone died.
Looks like 32 1/2" outside of planking.
13 1/4" deep and a couple inches shy of 16' long.
Gunwales decks and thwarts are mahogany so looks newer than 39.
I thought the sheer looked pretty flat so I was thinking ranger but can't make the dimensions work even allowing for some variation.
Looks like you know where to look for information on Thompson canoes, Craig, but I'll list a few things so that others know this information is available.
There's a Thompson boat rally in Marinette, WI, later this month-- June 27th from 9-5 (CDT). Not sure how many canoes will show up but Marinette is only a few hours from me, so I intend to "be a WCHA presence" and see all the pretty boats.
I checked my sheet and the Ranger with the low "guide shaped" end was offered from 1949 to 1953, and again in 1956.
Don't know about the width, the 16's are listed at 35".
Is the width outside of planking (which is 33") or outside of gunwale which would be 35?
I am not farmiluar enough withn Thompsons to tell if this is the almost flat sheer or not. Anyone have an opinion?
Kathy, dont forget Dan's site. http://dragonflycanoe.com/wood-canoe-identification-guide/thompson-brothers/
