Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi everyone, I’m starting to put together materials and supplies to restore a 70’s guide special, 16’. I am looking for insight on tack length and style for chestnut hulls with 3/8” ribs. The last such canoe I worked on was a 60’s Prospector, 10 or so years ago, and was able to source 3/4” oval head brass tacks which seem to be the proper length for the heavier chestnuts.
DB Gurney appears to no longer offer this combination, what are other folks using? Is there a disadvantage to using flat head tacks for w/c construction (3/4” flat heads are available), or does the standard 11/16” provide enough length for a proper clinch?
Thank you for any insight! I’ll be burning through a lot of tacks on this project with over 2 dozen ribs to replace…
