standard canvas vs heavy weight

What is difference, other than actual mass. And why one vs the other?

Hi Sam,

Number 10 duck is what was used on most canoes and is what most of us use today.

Number 12 is much lighter/thinner and was used on lightweight model canoes and is used by some in place of the #10.

The heaver #10 will take a lot more abuse than the #12.

I will admit I have never used #12

Good luck,

Paul

Thanks Paul
I was wondering if the thicker canvas will be better at hiding some of the "old age dimples " on my canoe and provide a smoother finished hull. Boat is smooth and all is true but does have a few dimples. And is the heavier canvas going to make my canoe look like the "stay puff marshmallow" canoe.?

#10 will hide more and once filled and painted you won't know the difference between #10 and #12 until you hit a rock or some other sharp object.

I'm not. I just don't want people to point and laugh

People are more likely to point and laugh at you struggling to lift an exceptionally heavy canoe than at a few dimples or bumps. Most people accept that an old canoe will have picked up some 'character' over the years.
