RUSHTON REPLICA: Member Mark Whitcomb had the chance to take the lines off of an 1885 Rushton Buck Tail canoe, so he decided to try his hand at lofting and building a new canoe. Nice job Mark! REFLECTIONS: Member Jim Wilson framed this striking shot on the Oswego River, in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, in the spring of 2011. This beautiful canoe is a 17 foot long Old Town OTCA model in AA (or top) grade. It was restored by member Mike Leone. Happy campers: Matt Mahoney and his son, Brian, in a canoe from Island Falls Canoe. It was built by Jerry Stelmok based on the E.M. White Guide. The 18 1⁄2-foot canoe was a fiftieth birthday present to Matt from his wife. The photo was taken in 2006 on a trip on the Moose River in Maine. Matt reports that this canoe was his introduction to wood and canvas canoes. The canoe has been loaded up like this for several northern Maine trips and is a delight when tripping. A Shearwater 16 built by John Wilkinson of Valkyrie Craft Canoes in Northern Ireland . The photo was taken one winters morning on the River Bann upstream of the town of Coleraine. SUNSET PADDLE: A peaceful 2014 summer solstice sunset paddle at Camp Wabun on Lake Temagami, Ontario. Founded in 1933, Camp Wabun continues the tradition of wood and canvas canoes, wooden wannigan food boxes, and leather tumplines with its campers. Cartopping an Otca - Montana 1912. Carrying a canoe on cars without rain gutters or rails today is a challenge but this is a much different approach. The original picture has a few more details saying "From N. E. Roberts, Kalispell, Montana, 3/26/12" on the back. “A Family Outing”. A 1920 Old Town HW AA Grade owned by Jamie Dyer of Thurso Scotland. The Canoe earning its keep moving the family and gear in the Scottish Highlands. This was a family trip in early August 2020 with a lunch stop on the Isle Eileen Ruairidh Mor, north end of Loch Maree Scotland.

"Thames Treasures"

The photo above was taken on a recent WCHA -UK paddle day on the River Thames. The trip was featured in the last edition of WOODEN CANOE. It never ceases to amaze me how many quality North American and Canadian Canoes travelled 4000 miles across the Atlantic to new homes in the UK. In this photo you can spot an Old town OTCA, A 1900 Peterborough Cedar rib, a Huron trapper, a 1910 Rushton Navahoe, a 1930's Peterborough strip canoe, a modern Peterborough cedar strip canoe, a further 1930's CCC cedar rib and a Henri Vaillancourt 16' St Lawrence River Malecite birchbark canoe. Why paddle when you can sail? FULL SAIL - FULL CIRCLE: Benson Gray and his 1936 OTCA under full sail at the 2009 Assembly on Keuka Lake. This is an 18 foot, AA Grade OTCA with sponsons, design #4 paint scheme (a.k.a. the Indian Design), and 45 and 55 square foot sails. There are gudgeons for a rudder on both the bow and stern, so it can be sailed forward with a single sail or backward with two sails (as shown in the photo). This provides a tremendous number of possibilities for matching the sail area to the conditions. The canoe was originally shipped to Benson’s grandfather, returned to Old Town for repairs in 1939, and sold in 1942. Quite by chance, Benson found the canoe in southern Maine in 2002, brought it back into the Gray family, and had it restored to its present beautiful condition. #wcha #canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe #keukalake #keukacollege

BIRCHBARK! On the green at Paul Smith’s College, July 2003. Member Jim Wilson caught this amazing image of a lineup of birchbark canoes, which were the featured canoes at Assembly that year. This illustrates one of the many unique aspects of the WCHA and its annual Assembly, when the universe of wooden canoes converges in one spot for four days of fun, learning, and sharing. Canoe Pile: This photo came from the Old Town Canoe Company archives. It appears to have been used for something by the crop marks and notes from the back but it does not appear to have been published in any Old Town or Carleton catalog. As the year moves on into autumn/fall we are reminded that the end of the canoeing season approaches faster for some than for others.
EARLY SNOW: Even as the last vestiges of fall color remain, a surprise early snowfall catches this canoe with an uncharacteristic look. Late October at member Lew Markle's home in South Wales, NY, and his 16 foot wood canvas canoe is hoping for a few more outings before the pond freezes over. Lew built this canoe by stretching a 15 foot Canadian-style canoe that he liked – believe it or not, it is actually painted red! #wcha #canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe
