Serial Number Search

I recently bought a 16' OT sailing canoe with serial number 183792. It has a blue figerglass hull with white integrated fiberglass seats. There are no thwarts between the seats. The sail rig is complete except for the mast step. Any information on build date and where I might find a mast step would be appreciated. Thanks. Russ

The Old Town canoe with serial number 183792 is a 16 foot long Wahoo model with a lateen sailing rig, desert white decks and a blue hull. It was built in September, 1969 and shipped on April 20th, 1970 to Riverside, Conn. A scan of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail image below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

The mast step is usually fiberglassed into the hull with a tube to the bow seat as shown in the second attached image below of a Wahoo that was built in 1972. What parts are you missing?

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson--thank you very much for your quick response to my request! I feel confident that you have the correct build record for my canoe. My mast support is a mahogany clamp-on contraption that attaches to the gunwales. I suspect the mast step was also a block of mahogany. At the bottom of the build record it says my boat was "foamed." Do you know what this means? Thanks. Russ

The Wahoo and other FG models had foam injected under the rails and decks for flotation. This was done to yours on September 18th, 1969 which increased the final weight to 89 pounds. Please post a picture of your mast support since it doesn't sound like the standard one.
