Thanks

Hey I was at that auction but couldn't stay....what did you end up having to pay for it...nice canoe....I'm guessing 30's or earlier.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 20414 is 18 foot long and their one with number 120414 is a CS grade with no mahogany. The Kennebec Canoe Company did not issue a serial number 20414. My guess is that you have the Carleton canoe with number 20414. This is an 16 foot long, Indian Princess in AA (or top) grade, Carleton model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between June, 1937 and April, 1938. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 19th, 1940 to Washington, D. C. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link under the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Congratulations on your success at the auction and good luck with the restoration.

Mr Gray,
Thanks for the quick reply and info. I am pretty sure that the boat is the Carleton you referenced as I am certain of the serial # and all the details fit. I did not mention the floor rack which is still with the boat. Two more questions, seeing OT manufactured the Carleton, was the Indian Princess a distinct hull type only available as a Carlton, or a renamed Old T style? If it was a renamed Old Town type, which type?
Thanks again.

The Carleton Indian Princess was actually a grade with lots of mahogany that was equivalent to the AA grade from Old Town. The Carleton hull shapes and forms were separate from the Old Town ones as shown at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=24296&d=1360243338 in the factory inventories at the bottom of the page. The description of the Indian Princess from the 1940 Carleton catalog is attached below. More information like this is available at http://store.wcha.org/The-Historic-...pany-Catalog-Collection-Version-2-CD-ROM.html in the catalog collection. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question. Thanks,

Benson
