I just picked up my new (OLD) boat yesterday which was thought to have no hull number but I just noticed this, in the bow.

Any information you might have on it would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 164761 is a 12 foot long, AA (or top) grade sport boat with half ribs and a keel. It was built between February and October, 1956. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on January 31st, 1957 to Duquesne, Penna. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-Membership-Renewal.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your boat or number. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson,
I cannot thank you enough for being able to find and relay that record. I know I should also be thanking all involved in assembling the database. Thank you!

I did join earlier today and will make a donation as soon as a check clears (oh, to be self employed). This looks to be an interesting introduction to wood-canvas as the topside is in great condition but the under, being what I believe is original (min. 20 years old), is in need of restoration, patching, or new canvas. I will be relying on my new friends at WCHA for their thoughts. Once I get a cradle made and it inverted I can send photos.

Thank you again,
Mark
