Hello Doug--

Two things about canoe color: if you need to paint it the original color and this knowledge is unavailable-- "dark green"--- "when in doubt, paint it dark green" IF you like that color...

However: you can paint it any color you want, without violating the unwritten rules of canoe restoration, because the original buyer got to choose. And this boat's record is an example of that:

Old Town 161264 is a 12 foot CS (common sense or middle grade) square stern boat that was completed December 1953 to July 1956, with a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was originally dark green and was shipped to Danbury, CT, on August 14, 1956. It was returned to Old Town for credit on November 17, 1956, with a notation that seems to indicate the buyer didn't like dark green. It was then re-sold and shipped to Ashland, NH, on November 17, 1956. Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
