I just returned from my round-trip from Tennessee to Rhode Island where I picked up my first vintage Old Town. I hope you can provide a copy of the build sheet for the canoe.

After a little dusting off, she'll spend the next few years wowing admirers from high above on the living room wall.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hello,

Old Town 208586 doesn't come up as a wooden canoe, so if what you have is a wooden canoe, check the serial numbers on both stems and compare, and we can try again. OT 208586 is a 16 foot Chipewayan canoe in avocado that was shipped to Wakefield, RI, on 7-1-1975. Information on the reverse of the card states it returned for repair of torn skin in the center of the hull and was sold 4-3-75 to someone in Kenyon, RI.

I'll also attach a page from the 1975 catalog, describing the Chipewayan as having a vacuum-formed vinyl ABS foam sandwich hull with extruded vinyl rails and ABS decks and seats. Hope this helps.Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Revised serial number 171485

Kathryn,

Interesting news, but it does confirm a few thoughts in my head. The gentleman I bought the canoe from in RI said he was the second owner and it is a 1958 model. He provided me with an Old Town original warranty card and some other info, but I suspected the paperwork was newer than 1958. The phamplet deisgn, font, etc. just did't look like something from the 50s. So indeed, the warranty card and paperwork are from the newer boat you describe.

I was able to dissolve much of the varnish on both of the stems last night, and revealed the number 171485. Can't wait to see what you find ...

Thanks for your help,
