Rushton?

Ok, i got the canoe home i think is a rushton. Everything points to it, but the paint prohibits me from finding the j rushton stamp . But here are some photos. Let me know what you think. It is a solid canoe.

Yup, if you scrape that tie down on the bow you will likely find a Rushton mark. This one is #2996 and has the badge of shame on it. Inc. (Post J.H.)

More , i hope its an indian girl it is 18' long, 36" wide and about 11 or 12" high.

My serial no. Is 2239. The man I bought it from had it advertised as an 18' old town. He bought it at an auction, and thats what they said it was . But i knew it wasnt. But didnt know what it was. I almost passed on it. I have not taken it out yet but will this weekend.

Dabbing some ZipStrip on that painter ring may show an "inc" and narrow down Dan's determination of when "inc-ing" happened in the serial number lineup!

Love those Old Towns that turn out to be Rushtons and Gerrishes and old E.M. Whites!

The painter ring will only be stamped "Rushton", regardless of when it was built. The "Inc." part will show up in the Rushton brand on the stems, if it is there. The top of the thwart should also be stamped "U.S./Trade/Indian Girl/Mark/Registered", so be careful cleaning the paint of the thwart...

I would add that you must be very, very carefull when removing paint and varnish from the stem. The Rushton brand that Dan mentioned above is not very legible. It should be located forward of the serial number on the stem and would be destroyed if scraped even a little bit. Fred

i'm convinced.

I took some pointers from Fred and was able to just barely see it on my stems. Photo attached.

I just talked to a furniture stripper to remove the paint from the inside. It has like three coats. I think that is what saved the ribs and planking ,because there is no rot and those parts all look original. I think the gunwhales are replaced and the seats were repaired and it also has a new keel and canvas.he said minimum 400.00 -800.00 to strip. For an 18'. He is the only one i could find to even consider it in Mass. Out of 12 companies.

what i paid

I paid 250 for one and 600 for another, both were 17', same guy same day. Just different jobs. Here's a photo of my 15' -er the day I removed the canvas.

I did some paint stripping on the stems today. I found the stamps. it is jh rushton canton ny. there is no inc. and the serial # is 2289. there is like 5 coats of paint.the inwhales are original. it is just the outwhales that have been replaced and the keel. also the seats have been repaired. i dont know about the thwart,it is not stamped but it is the right shape. everything else is original and it looks like the paint preserved it nicely. the stamps are nice and deep.

I took it out saturday afternoon with my son.i carried it myself.it balances so nice on my shoulders. It was absolutley no problem carrying it 300 yards on a tight over grown path to the charles river.it paddles so smooth and is very fast.i am really becoming attached to this canoe.i forgot my camera

I paid around $450 cash for a Rushton 17' to get stripped. worth every penny.

got some pics of my Rushton on here somewhere if you search the forum. I'll try to find a link and post here to simplify for you. I was lucky, my canoe has a clean Ohio title with the Rushton serial number since it has been passed down in my family. Much later than yours, and a Inc. canoe.
