LOVES Wooden Canoes
Good Morning! Looking for information on the following hull number:

The number is 161545 18, an OT Guide w/ ash decks, not sure from pics owner has sent to me, but it looks like the original color was dark green, boat has floorboards, It looks like both inwales and outwales are ash??? Is there any reference to that on the build sheet??

Bye the way, I will take care on membership to the group today, this is a great resource!

Thanks, Todd

Todd: The Old Town canoe with serial number 161545 is an 18 foot long, CS grade, Guide model with a keel. It was built between January and September, 1954. The original exterior paint color was green. It was shipped on September 15th, 1954 to Calais, Maine. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

- Al

Todd,

Glad you are joining WCHA - welcome to a great organization.

The ash inwales & outwales are not usual, especially in a CS grade boat - they were usually spruce. Might be a replacement, but by the 50's, build records did not seem to have the attention to detail that they did in early days. If you re-construct look for evidence of different screw holes in the ribtops after you remove the outwale and different nailing pattern from the inwale.

Thanks for the info on the gunwales, the other question I have now that I've had chance to look at the build record, does G.S. Green refer to "Guide Special" green??? If so, is that the dark green I typically associate with an OT Guide or another color???

Guide Special was a little bit lighter than the Dark Green so often mentioned in the build recor

Thanks Mike, and Thanks Al!!!

Mike, you think the Guide Special Green would be about the shade of "Brilliant Green" on the Old Town color chip Benson sent to me on my "request for two numbers" post last week???
