Hi Todd--

Old Town 15706 is a 17 foot CS grade HW... so it isn't your canoe. The Carleton with that number is also a 17 footer.

It's been my experience that 13 foot Old Towns with five digit serial numbers are called "fifty pounders" on the build record.

Check the s/n again, and we'll track it down!

The Old Town Trapper, Lightweight, Featherweight, and Fifty Pound models were all built on the same set of forms so the difference is primarily the date when it was made. The thirteen foot version of the Fifty Pound model was first introduced in the 1926 catalog. The name was changed to the lightweight model in the 1966 catalog. The thirteen foot long Trapper model was introduced in the 1973 catalog with "reinforced plastic" (a.k.a fiberglass) instead of canvas. This is the model name that is in the current catalog today at http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/canoes/classic_wood/trapper_13.html although it is now available with fiberglass or canvas covering.

The chart at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/oldtown_chart.html shows that an Old Town serial number in the fifteen thousand range dates from around 1911 so there is probably a hidden digit in your serial number. I have checked several obvious candidates including 115706, 15706x, etc. but didn't find a match. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=791 may help you find it or post some pictures here of the numbers in both ends. It will also simplify things if you can identify which digit is the least clear. Thanks,
