Curious about Wooden Canoes
Joined the forum today and will join wcha when this is finished. Canoe serial number is 15 2508. Old Town sailing canoe. Was restored in Mass. and I purchased from Bass River Boatworks. Spent a great deal of time about concerns with shipping to me in OK. Neverthe less, it was punctured several times as well as cracked ribs and broken planks. I was assured none of this would happen. Regardless, I am going to take it apart, repair the damaged planks, ribs, inwale and gunnale, recanvas and paint anew. I would love any info that the serial number may provide. I look forward to making new friends on this forum once I learn more about it. Thanks for the help.

Ouch!

If no one picks up your serial number request here, you might re-post to the Serial Number Search section of the forum, designed just for requests such as yours.

Welcome to the WCHA. The Old Town canoe with serial number 152508 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, half ribs, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between February, 1949 and June, 1950. The original exterior paint was similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design37.gif which was known as the design number 37. The name "Quick Silney"(?) was painted in 2.5 inch black block letters on the right and left bow. It shipped on June 8th, 1950 to South Hanson, Mass. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson

Thank you fellas. And Benson, that is it. This is very cool to have this info. Have joined wcha and looking forward to the membership and this forum. About beginning the restoration....I am having great concerns about starting due to our weather. It is over 100 every day now withno relief at least this next 10 days of going under 100. Have had 40+ days in a row over 95 with 20+ of those over 100. I did walkin the back room of the house this morning and it hit me that the canoe would definately fit in there. Haven't mentioned it to the wife yet, however. Did see that there is a wcha chapter in Meremac Missouri and hope to contact those folks....about 5 hours from here so not bad. I'll keep you all updated about the restore start date.
Mike
