Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hello all, I'm new and will be posting later this spring on two early Old Town canoes I will be restoring. In the meantime, I just picked up this great woodstrip boat and would like to ID it. I'm TOLD it's a 1957 Peterson. The seller had it for a year, it came with the house he bought and never put it in the water. I'm working on contacting the previous owner who could be the original owner to verify this and see if there is a story. The deck has been replaced by plywood screwed to the gunwhales. I'm assuming this wold be where the maker's plate was mounted. Does anyone have access to the 1950s catalogs so I can compare and identify? Or can anyone ID this boat? The tip to stern directly measures 13.5 feet but the outwale measures 14. Width at the stern at the gunwhales is 43" and it's about 56" at the widest point near the middle. The belly also bulges at the middle of the boat below the gunwhales. I will post the pic in a bit, I just realized I can't from my iPad on here.

Ok, I just spent a half hour Creating a new email acct, downloading the jpeg from here to here on a PC only to get errors of invalid file. If anyone knows how I can get a pic on here via iPad, let me know.

Andreas Rhude has been keeping a list of Wisconsin boat builders that includes the list of Peterson builders below. There is also a Peterson Boat Works at http://petersonboatworks.com/ in Canada. The 1954 catalog page of Peterson boats at http://www.ebay.com/itm/151015161748 may interest you.

Yes, there were at least THREE "Peterson" firms building boats in Wisconsin! Peterson Builders of Sturgeon Bay was a large ship builder, so they can probably be eliminated form your search list.

Peterson Boat Works at Hayward and Peterson Bros. Boat Works at Shell Lake both made canoes and row boats. Peterson Bros. of Shell Lake converted to fiberglass in the 1950s and they stopped making watercraft in the late 1950s. They continued in the fiberglass business making tanks and other items.

There may have been other "Peterson" named watercraft builders in other states and in Canada.
