Penn Yan G295

Most Penn Yan canoes have a two or three letter prefix as described in the first link below. This lists the scout prefix as GN. The first scout model appears to have been listed in the 1948 catalog. The other two links below show circa 1928 and 1938 catalogs (with no Scout model listed). There are no detailed serial number records known to exist for Penn Yan. The theory that their serial numbers contain embedded dates seems highly unreliable. Can you supply any pictures of your serial number, bow deck, stem profile, seats, and thwarts? Thanks,

Benson

Penn Yan used the first two digits to designate the year of manufacture immediately after WWII. I have seen the date used as early as 1946. The boat or canoe would almost always have a space after the numbers indicating the date and the numbers following. After circa 1957, PY no longer indicated the date of manufacture, but simply had numbers. Nobody, so far as I know, has figured out any scheme. My guess is that your canoe was made some time after 1957.

I appreciate the clarification. This spacing isn't always obvious as shown in the examples below. Some clearly have more digits than others.
